SWEDISH/THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE Massage is one of the oldest forms of medicine known to man. It dates back to ancient Egypt. (around 2300 BC). Therapeutic massage helps to ease stresses and strains in our day to day lives, releasing any tensions that build up within our bodies. It is also very good for any muscular aches and pains i.e. muscle strains etc. Therapeutic massage treats the whole being, the mind, body and spirit. Each system within our body gains an enormous benefit from having a
massage treatment and below are some of these highlighted: The Nervous System Massage effects can either be soothing, relaxing and have a sedative effect thus reducing the nervous tension held in the system. It helps disorders such as insomnia, tension headaches and other stress related conditions by bringing peace and harmony to the troubled mind. It also has a stimulating effect on the nerves which promote increased activity in muscles, vessels and glands which are governed by them. In cases of lethargy and fatigue, symptoms are greatly reduced. The Muscular System Muscles can be balanced by relaxing and contracting them by massage movements that stretch and relax the soft tissues of the body. This reduces muscular tension and cramp. Fibrous tissue, adhesions and old scar tissue can be broken down and waste deposits dispersed into the lymphatic system. It improves muscle tone and breaks down fatty tissue or cellulous. Muscle tiredness, stiffness and lactic acid build up within the muscle from over activity can be reduced by muscular contraction and relaxation. The Skeletal System Bone structure is indirectly affected by massage from the stimulation,
increased flow of blood and lymph (circulation) to the underlying bones
benefiting their nutrition and growth. The Circulatory System Massage takes the strain off the arteries and veins by increasing the flow of blood through the system to bring relief from poor circulation and cardiac problems. This causes the heart beat to strengthen which in turn reduces the rate at which the heart beats and reduces high blood pressure. The Lymphatic System Massage increases the flow rate of lymph throughout our systems by
increasing the circulation. The Respiratory System Massage increases the activity in the lungs. It can deepen and slow the breath. Mucus or bronchial secretions can be helped to leave the lungs by percussion and vibration massage techniques on the back and around the lung area. The Digestive System Stomach massage around the path of the colon helps with the elimination of faecal matter and alleviates constipation. It strengthens the walls of the intestine and abdomen and stimulates the secretion of digestive juices from the liver, pancreas, stomach and intestines. It increases the absorption of digested foods. The Skin Massage stimulates the sebaceous and sweat glands which improves their function and elimination of waste products. Dead skin cells are removed so leaving the pores open, allowing increased skin respiration, suppleness and elasticity. This helps with the skins condition, tone and texture. The Genito-Urinary System Abdominal and back massage promotes activity in the kidneys which helps and accelerates the elimination of waste products and reduces fluid retention. The Reproductive System Abdominal and back massage can greatly reduce menstrual problems such as period pains, irregular menstruation, PMS and symptoms of the menopause. Therapeutic massage is an excellent preventative treatment essential for maintaining our health and fitness, bring our body into a state of homeostasis. It improves our sense of well being, keeping our lives happy, harmonious and free of illness. More and more people are awakening to the idea of complementary therapies to aid and promote their well being.
